Building Multi-Tenant SaaS Applications in Laravel

Multi-tenancy is the backbone of every SaaS product. Whether you are building a CRM, project management tool, or e-commerce platform, understanding how to isolate tenant data securely in Laravel is essential.

Multi-tenant SaaS architecture diagram

Approach 1: Database per Tenant

Each tenant gets its own isolated database. This provides the strongest data isolation and makes backup/restore per-tenant trivial. The tradeoff is higher connection overhead and more complex migrations.

// Dynamically set tenant connection
config(["database.connections.tenant.database" => "tenant_{$tenantId}"]);
DB::purge("tenant");
DB::reconnect("tenant");

Approach 2: Shared Database with Row-Level Scoping

All tenants share the same tables, with a tenant_id column scoping every query. This is simpler to manage but requires discipline to never forget the scope.

// Global scope example
class TenantScope implements Scope
{
    public function apply(Builder $builder, Model $model)
    {
        $builder->where("tenant_id", tenant()->id);
    }
}

Choosing the Right Strategy

  • Start with shared database for MVP — faster to build and iterate
  • Migrate to database-per-tenant when compliance or scale demands it
  • Consider hybrid: shared for metadata, isolated for sensitive data

Key Laravel Packages

The Laravel ecosystem has excellent multi-tenancy packages like Stancl/Tenancy and Hyn/Multi-Tenant. We recommend Stancl for new projects due to its active maintenance and elegant API.

"Multi-tenancy is not just a technical decision — it is a product decision. Let your pricing tiers guide your isolation strategy."

Handling Tenant Onboarding

We built a provisioning pipeline that creates the tenant database, runs migrations, seeds default data, and configures the custom domain — all triggered by a successful subscription payment webhook.
